Autumn 2011

Doctor Zhivago

As we see our old, beloved favourites doing the rounds, there is also a fresh shining light on the musical horizon: Doctor Zhivago. Based on the novel of the same name, it is not as cheerful as stereotypically seen on theatre stages however, nonetheless is a must see. Some of the first chapters of the original novel were written in 1910, but it was not finished until 1956. Boris Pasternak’s famous novel was first converted into a five-time Oscar winning movie and has now been converted into a stellar new musical featuring the talents of Anthony Warlow, and directed by Broadway’s amazing Des McAnuff.

Summer 2010-2011

Theatre in Australia has certainly entered an interesting time. No longer are we seeing the same loved band of ‘classic’ musicals on their almost 10-year cycle, but there are some new stories - some good and bad - being thrown into the mix. There are stories from movies, successful books, even politicians and sports stars, but most of all sequels and prequels. Is it too wicked for this writer to assume musicals are heading in the same direction as mainstream films? With Rocky 6, Police Academy 7 and the latest Toy Story 3 out, I believe part of the magic of theatre is the whole story, a tale that takes you on a musical journey so your ‘senses can abandon their defenses’. Will we see more obvious sequels of musicals? Maybe Crazy For You 2? Or West Side Second Story?
