Tradition, style and rip-roaring performance
In the state of Maine, tucked up in the very northeast corner of the United States, there is a tradition of boat building known as ‘downeast’ style. The term seems a little odd considering the state of Maine is about as far north as one can travel in that particular country! Happily, one of the questions most asked by tourists to Maine is regarding where the term is derived. It transpires that in older days a lot of trade was conducted to Maine by sailing vessels from Boston, Massachusetts. Relying on northwesterly trade winds, the vessels sailed down-wind to get to Maine, hence the term going ‘downeast’ to Maine. |
